Friday’s Elk: A Newsletter For Those Who Like Their Science By Email

newsletter header-better.001I’ve discovered that some people who read my stuff don’t obsess over RSS, Twitter, Facebook, and the rest of the social media world the way I do, so I’ve decided to email a short newsletter every Friday. If you’d like to receive Friday’s Elk each week, sign up here. That way, not a single parasitic wasp or mouse-unculus will pass you by!

  1. I have done this, but now am feeling kind of castigated for being out of touch with social media — it’s the image of that elk. Are you suggesting that those of us who aren’t on Twitter are like Irish elk, destined to become extinct? Or are you the elk, incredibly elaborated with a weighty ornament? Or is Twitter the elk? Or . . . wait, I am confusing myself.

[CZ: No need to be confused! I just love Irish elk. I’ve had one on the home page of for 13 years.]

  2. really i am feeling to give a comment on legendary carl zimmer .one of the great writter on science topics ever…

  3. @Marlene Zuk — I too was having mental musing about his choice of the Irish Elk! 🙂
Carl Zimmer writes so prolifically about small things that it was interesting that he would choose something so big to be his ‘signature’ animal.
I think that both of us are just overthinking it. 🙂

  4. Signed up.

By the way, did you see Mike Morwood, co-discoverer of the “Hobbit”, died last week?

You wrote quite a lot about that discovery at the time, so I was half-expecting to see some coverage.

But maybe I missed some post or other – I was out of town the last month or so.

  5. Carl, if you have not yet seen the last installment of The Hobbit, I’m pretty sure King Thranduil is riding an Irish Elk,
