a random DNA letter is something totally different than a gene (which has a specific location within the DNA and order and number of DNA letters) Most species differ more than 1 in a 100 DNA letters from eachother! As explained at the beginning of the article.

Varying by 1 DNA letter in 100 is about how much we vary from the chimpanzee (99% identical). Is that number correct or have you slipped a decimal?

As for scientific names "vampyroteuthis infernalis" (vampire squid from hell) is much cooler.

There are so many of these guys lurking in the depths, and so many species we have yet to know I am saddened that more people are not investigating the oceans and more importantly preserving our global waters. if anyone needs volunteers to help on our waters, anywhere, I offer my services free. All I ask is a soft bed and food for survival. No camping please. Ships ok. We will find them. I await your contact. Lets go! Swim.

Mitochondrial DNA is not the whole story! Although, I think that the assumption made by this study is correct, that there is only a single species of Architeuthis, I would wait to see what the Nuclear DNA shows before stating that Architeuthis has no population structure.
