Instead, brush with water, eat hard cheeses. Flouride is just the partially efective antidote for sugar and grains. Your teeth do actively remineralize (otherwise what would be the point of flouride), they are not dead.
Even processed cheese has benefits but: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2076251

I enjoyed this and Carl Zimmer's article about what antibiotics do to the microbial ecosystem within. It's all fascinating, and it all makes sense. Clearcut a forest, and weeds are going to grow in its place. Poison the microbes in your body, and who knows what will pop up.

My question is, so what do we do instead? How do I prevent tooth decay without using mouthwash and fluoride?

Just to make sure I'm understanding you correctly, I should stop using mouth wash. Problem is, how do I know the bacteria that will fill my mouth aren't mostly the bad ones? The article just said my modern diet gives me less good and more bad bacteria, so even though mouth wash is killing the good bacteria, isn't it killing more of the bad? Plus I then brush with fluoride toothpaste to build back up the enamel, filling in for the good bacteria.

This is fascinating stuff! I think what amazes me the most is the creativity of scientists in coming up with ways to test hypotheses. Astounding! I can draw a perfect portrait, but this kind of creativity is beyond me, which puts me in awe of it.
