Steven Pinker's Style Guide

Each year I run a workshop for science graduate students at Yale, encouraging them to write clearly, compellingly, and effectively. I’m tempted next year to just cue up this video of Steven Pinker discussing his next book–a psychology-based guide to good writing–and kick back.

  1. Thanks for the link to that video.

I’m a computer programmer by trade; and I sometimes find expository writing, from comments in the code to larger documentation of a whole system, a bit of a struggle. There often seems to be a trade-off between making a paragraph readable while making each sentence true and unambiguous. Hopefully 8-), the video will help me.

  2. The classic “Elements of Style” by Strunk & White still remains a most valuable reminder at the beginning of each and every large writing project.

  3. Thanks for the link to the video, Carl. But somehow, I get the sense it still wouldn’t replace a workshop with you at the helm. Sadly, Yale is a bit too far east for this non-science non-grad non-student. 🙁 😉
