Photo safari – darkling beetle

I saw this large beetle scurrying around the ruins of the roman city of Jerash in Jordan. It was the first live sighting after seeing several of its squashed peers.

  1. I assume everyone’s familiar with the Haldane story?

Someone asked him what he had learnt about the almighty as a result of his scientific work, and Haldane said “Well, I know he has an inordinate love of beetles.” (Quoting from memory).

  2. The picture shows Adesmia ulcerosa ulcerosa (Klug, 1830). It is similar to Adesmia cancellata and does not occure in Spain.
